Introducing Biu, Tsoi Sung-piu: August AIAR Resident Artist from Hong Kong

Artudio is excited to welcome Biu, Tsoi Sung-piu as our newest artist-in-residence under the Artudio International Artists Residency (AIAR) program. Based in Hong Kong, Biu is an image-based art practitioner whose work centers on tableau photography — a carefully staged yet conceptually rich approach to visual storytelling.

Biu graduated in 2023 with a BA in Philosophy from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, a background that deeply informs his reflective, concept-driven practice. In Fall 2025, he will begin his MA in Fine Arts, further expanding his exploration of photography, performance, and installation.

At the heart of Biu’s work is an approach to photography as a form of play — an experimental, staged exploration of how humans react to spaces that are both constructed and habituated. His tableaux often blur the boundaries between reality and artifice, revealing the concealed intensity of our lived narratives. By placing human subjects within environments that feel at once familiar and strange, he invites viewers to consider how space, gesture, and context shape our perceptions of truth and meaning.

Currently, Biu is investigating contemporary Asian conceptions of technics and ritual — examining how cultural practices, technologies, and inherited traditions intersect in the modern world. Through his lens, rituals are not static or archaic, but living systems that adapt, mutate, and reveal the tensions between the past and present.

During his time at Artudio in Kathmandu, Biu will immerse himself in the layered cultural and spatial fabric of the city. The residency will serve as both a laboratory and a stage — a place where he will research and create new photographic works, respond to local environments, and engage in dialogue with fellow artists and the community.

As with all AIAR residencies, his stay will culminate in a public sharing of works-in-progress and insights through open studios, artist talks, and exhibitions. This will offer Nepalese audiences a chance to engage directly with his evolving process, while also fostering cross-cultural conversations about image-making, narrative construction, and the performative possibilities of photography.

We are thrilled to see how Biu’s thoughtful, play-driven approach will resonate with Nepal’s own dynamic intersections of tradition and modernity. His residency promises to bring fresh perspectives to Artudio’s creative community and beyond.

Stay tuned for updates on his journey, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and announcements for upcoming public events.
