Artudio is pleased to present “Nun ra Sun / Sool ja Kuld”, a residency exhibition by Estonian textile designer and researcher Liisi Tamm, developed during her February–March 2026 residency at Artudio International Artist Residency.
The title draws inspiration from an old Nepali saying that reflects a philosophy of self-reliance: that salt and gold are the only things one needs to buy, while everything else can be made by hand. Through this lens, the exhibition explores the enduring value of traditional knowledge, artistic practices, and the quiet strength embedded in everyday acts of making.
During her residency, Tamm traveled across the Kathmandu Valley and beyond, engaging with local textile traditions, natural fibers, and hand-making practices. Her research involved conversations and exchanges with women artisans, observing how inherited skills and tactile knowledge continue to shape both livelihood and identity.
Through a series of textile explorations developed during the residency, the exhibition reflects on material memory, labor, and the relationship between tradition and contemporary practice. The works embody a dialogue between cultures—bridging Estonian textile sensibilities with the rich artistic heritage of Nepal—while highlighting the importance of preserving and reinterpreting artisanal knowledge in a rapidly changing world.
“Nun ra Sun / Sool ja Kuld” invites viewers to consider the value embedded in handmade processes and the generational wisdom carried through fiber, gesture, and the act of making.
