Artudio is pleased to welcome Emily Faltyn, a documentary photographer from Buffalo, New York, USA, as our International Artist in Residence for August 2026 under the Artudio International Artist Residency (AIAR) program.
Emily works exclusively with analog film and independently develops her photographs, embracing a slow and intentional photographic process that values presence, patience, and human connection. Her practice focuses on documenting minority communities, Indigenous and tribal groups, disappearing cultures, and lesser-known religious traditions through long-term engagement and ethical collaboration.
Over the years, Emily has carried out photographic projects across Morocco, Turkey, Israel/Palestine, and Egypt, where she has developed an approach rooted in trust, reciprocity, and cultural understanding. Rather than observing communities from a distance, she believes meaningful documentary photography emerges through shared experiences, respect for local customs, and relationships built over time.
Expanding beyond conventional documentary photography, Emily’s multidisciplinary practice incorporates double exposure, sound, poetry, and ink, often integrating materials collected from the landscapes, homes, and sacred spaces she encounters. These elements create layered visual narratives that explore memory, spirituality, identity, and place while reflecting the emotional and cultural resonance of each environment.
During her residency in Nepal, Emily will immerse herself in Kathmandu’s diverse cultural landscape, continuing her research through analog photography while engaging with local communities, traditions, and everyday life. The residency provides an opportunity for artistic exchange, dialogue, and experimentation, contributing to Artudio’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding through contemporary art.
