Artudio is pleased to announce An Experiment on Intimacy, a solo exhibition by American documentary photographer Emily Faltyn, presented as part of her Artudio International Artist Residency (AIAR).
Developed during her residency in Kathmandu, the exhibition presents a body of analog photographs created through Emily’s engagement with Hiranyavarna Mahavihar (The Golden Temple), Patan, and the living traditions of the Shakya and Bajracharya communities of Newar Buddhism.
Rather than documenting the Golden Temple through its history or architecture, Emily approaches the temple as a space of intimate human interaction and ceremony. Her photographs pay attention to the subtle, purposeful gestures of everyday devotion—lighting sage, making offerings, turning prayer wheels, polishing butter lamps, meditating, and arranging and clearing flowers from the altars.
Working with a Minolta X-700 and Ilford HP5 film, Emily’s slow and attentive photographic process reflects her broader approach to documentary practice, which is rooted in presence, trust, and developing meaningful relationships with the communities she encounters.
An Experiment on Intimacy is therefore less an attempt to explain the Golden Temple than a visual conversation with it—a collection of moments that explore intimacy, ritual, faith, and the quiet rhythms of everyday spiritual life.
The exhibition invites viewers to look beyond the monumental and historical aspects of the temple and encounter the personal, sensory, and relational dimensions of a living sacred space.
