The Siddhartha Art Gallery is organizing a discussion on Nepali street art as part of its Amalgam Art Talk Series on July 27 at its premises in Babarmahal Revisited.

The discussion will focus on various aspects of the art form’s history and contemporary issues of street art and it aims to shed lights on the overall street art scene in Nepal.

Moderated by Nischal Oli, the panel will include artists such as Kailash K Shrestha, from Artudio, Priti Sherchan, from Sattya Media Arts Collective, and Shraddha Shrestha and Aditya Aryal, from Artlab, who will voice their opinions on the subject.

The presentation by Kailash K Shrestha will dwell on the history of murals, slogan typography and the arrival of graffiti and street art in Nepal. According to Shrestha, the tradition of mural wall painting here goes back a long way in history: earlier street art in Nepal was mostly dedicated to religious themes, and even just few years back, the medium was mostly used to promote political themes and agenda.

The art form took off in Nepal around 2008 and is today a rapidly evolving medium that has turned into a platform for showcasing everything from expressionistic works to thematic works that explore socio-political realities. Such has been the growth that today street artists from various backgrounds and schools of aesthetics have plastered walls in many localities in the Capital. It’s thanks to collectives and schools like Sattya and Artudio, who train artists in the art of mural painting, that street art is a thriving form in its own right.  

The organisers hope that the presentation and panel discussion will allow artists and people interested in street art to exchange ideas and information. The event will start from 3:30 pm and will go on till 5 pm.
